As an artist who enjoys responding to existing structures, the vice-like support was a starting point born of the restrictive feeling of lockdown. Always drawn to organic forms and the natural world, the knots and tendrils that grew from the supporting structure refer to the expansive connections that seemingly motionless trees and plants possess. While rooted and seemingly limited and captive in their site, they are in fact seeking and passing information and nutrition from an astonishingly wide network. The form is a reference to the language under the soil.
The willow has been worked directly onto the supporting structure to create the work, line by line, knot by knot.
